Days 1 to 3

Barcelona

Barcelona is a seaside city of wide avenues, a medieval core and a long list of Modernista buildings by Gaudí and his contemporaries. The main sights sit in a few zones that the metro connects well, and the beach is a short walk from the old town.

Barcelona to Valencia: 2 h 47 by train

Barcelona-Sants to València-Estació del Nord · Renfe

Take a train early in the morning or the evening before, so the day in Valencia starts on time.

Days 4 to 5

Valencia

Valencia sits on a flat plain by the Mediterranean, with a compact old town in the north and the City of Arts and Sciences at the far end of a long river park. Most of the history fits into a short walk through the old town, while the aquarium, the zoo and the beach need a tram, a bus or a bike. Rice dishes shape the day here, so lunch is part of the plan.

València-Joaquín Sorolla to Madrid-Chamartín-Clara Campoamor · Renfe, Ouigo, Iryo

Take a train early in the morning or the evening before, so the day in Madrid starts on time.

Days 6 to 8

Madrid

Madrid is a capital where most sights sit within a few kilometres of each other. The art museums line up along the Paseo del Arte, the Royal Palace and the old squares are a short walk west, and Gran Vía and Malasaña lie to the north. The metro covers anything further out.

Madrid to Seville: 2 h 38 by train

Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes to Sevilla-Santa Justa · Renfe, Ouigo, Iryo

Take a train early in the morning or the evening before, so the day in Seville starts on time.

Days 9 to 11

Seville

Seville packs a royal palace, one of the largest cathedrals in the world and a former Jewish quarter into a few flat square kilometres on the east bank of the Guadalquivir. Most of the big sights are a short walk apart, and the district of Triana sits just across the river. The city is built around the heat, so the day runs early, pauses in the afternoon and starts again after dark.

Seville to Granada: 2 h 37 by train

Sevilla-Santa Justa to Granada · Renfe

Take a train early in the morning or the evening before, so the day in Granada starts on time.

Days 12 to 14

Granada

Granada sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, with the Alhambra on one hill and the Albaicín on the other. Most sights are a short walk from the Cathedral, but the hills are steep and the Alhambra runs on timed tickets. Plan the Alhambra first and fit the rest around it.

Trains between the cities

Renfe runs the high-speed AVE and Avlo services between most of these cities, and Ouigo and Iryo compete on some of the routes through Madrid. Every seat is assigned when you buy, so popular times sell out and the lower fares go first, which makes it worth booking once your dates are fixed. Granada has fewer direct trains than the other cities, there is none from Valencia, and Madrid has two main stations, Atocha and Chamartín, so check which one your ticket uses.

When to go

April to June and late September to October bring mild weather to all five cities. July and August are very hot in Madrid, Seville and Granada, and the south is best kept for mornings and evenings in those months.

Before you go

  • Book the Alhambra and the Sagrada Família before you buy the trains, since their timed tickets set your dates.
  • Madrid's Atocha and Chamartín stations are on opposite sides of the centre, so check the station on your ticket and leave time if you change between them.
  • Lunch usually starts around 14:00 and dinner rarely before 21:00, so a travel day goes more smoothly if you eat on your own schedule.
  • Many museums close on Mondays and a few on Tuesdays, so plan travel days for when the main sights of the city you are leaving are shut.
